Money talk.... Networth versus Self-worth

What we must decide is perhaps how we are valuable rather than how valuable we are
Edgar Z. Friedenberg, The Vanishing Adolescent

Networth is an external measure of ones worth in financial terms, while self-worth is an internal measure of how much one’s value of oneself. In our society, there is a tendency to attach self-worth and other people’s approval to material things and ostentation.

The dangers of materialism
A society that celebrates a person’s worth based on his or her assets, connections, and influence is superficial, as it builds a social strata based on material things. When people are “encouraged” to amass and cling to possessions, when their sole pursuits are on making profit, seeking pleasure, and obtaining position, it leaves little energy, time, and ability to focus on their real purpose and the things that really matter.

A materialistic society rates individuals not on personal character and achievement, but rather on the fantastic shows of ostentation. In many nations, a societal value system has evolved where material fortune is more widely celebrated than diligence, honesty, honor and integrity; such virtues are seldom accorded the respect they deserve.
As materialism becomes endemic and a society equates self-worth with networth, placing with far too much emphasis on money, power, position, and possessions and acknowledging and celebrating wealth without questioning its source, there is a tendency for people to go to extremes in order to increase their networth at all costs and by any means possible, which ultimately leads to dishonesty and corruption.

SCF to launch POS database

Small and Medium Enterprise Competitiveness Facility (SCF) is set to launch a Point of Sale (POS) database which aims at assisting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to boost their sales to both domestic and international markets.

The product which targets small and medium entrepreneurs who process and sell food products will be launched tomorrow (Tuesday 12, June This year) in Dar es Salaam.

The database equipped with market information for Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar markets will help entrepreneurs to increase their sales through identification of appropriate distribution channels based on market segments

Speaking to press in his office in Dar es Salaam at the weekend, SCF Project Director Casmir Makoye said his office decided to develop POS database after it realized that many entrepreneurs were applying to be assisted to carry out market research which at times turns to be costly to the entrepreneurs.

“In carrying out our duties as SCF, we realized that many entrepreneurs do seek to carry out market research. We have been assisting them in that line, but we later realized that not all market research that one does gives a positive result, despites the expense one has incurred in the process. These are some reasons that pushed us to come up with this POS database, that will greatly assists SMEs,” he said.

According to Mr. Makoye POS database is a system that has taken all necessary food products outlets in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

He said in coming up with the POS database, they managed to survey 13,000 market outlets in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, touching on 19 major food categories.

“Given that vast market survey we have in the database, a food processor will find out where a particular product has a higher demand,” Mr. Makoye said.

Mentioning some benefits consumers of this product will have, the Project Director said the processor will be able to decide on the market he/she wants to take a food product depending on the level of his/her production.

“The database will show a producer where there are few distributors of a similar product but the market demand for his/her product is high.

“Third, it helps a processor to design his distribution channels. This means that he will be able to decide which market to take his products.

“Fourth, using the results of this POS database will help the processor or distributor to know what kind of food products that are not in the market but have higher demand. This can even allow a processor to do product deviation after seeing an opportunity.

“This database has contact details of the distributors, the name of the agents and variety of products he/she sells and even the size of his shop (floor steps) of which will help the producer or the processors to know the sales capacity of the said agent or distributor,” explained Mr. Makoye.

The Project Director was confident that if SMEs embrace POS database, they will increase their sales and intern increase their profit, thereby contributing to the national economic growth.

Tuongeze elimu kidogo…..What Underwear Taught Me About Customer Service……. It s Worth reading….

My first ever job was born out of necessity. I needed the money or I would starve! It was my first semester at the University of Houston and of all semesters to arrive, I choose to come in the spring semester where the temperatures were treacherously low. Sadly my first job was to referee soccer games outside in the blistering cold! The job was wretched, I hated it and felt sick almost everyday from the merciless weather. At that time I could not afford proper winter attire so I made do with whatever I could lay my hands  on.  I was able to routinely manufacture winter gloves by placing several latex gloves over each hand, but this did little to mitigate the cold sneaking through my fingers!
It was a relief when I finally got a  job that required me to work indoors. I was assigned to do inventory management at the University gym. It was 10 times better than freezing in the cold and I even got to watch TV during downtime! The only problem was the inventory, which included various sports uniforms and equipment. This was not really an issue until I realized that I had to wash them also. So people would dump their sweaty uniforms and I had to cart them off for laundry dispensation. If that was not bad enough I came to find out that  I also had to wash a certain item called jockstraps. The first time I heard about jockstraps I was confused I thought they were some type of shorts. In a way I was right but they were more than shorts…they were male underwear used to protect the male genitalia during sports and other vigorous activities. I stood  rooted in confusion when I realized that they were part of the repertoire of uniforms I had to wash! Somehow I had gotten  a job as an underwear washer!

MANDELA IMAGES IN NEW SOUTH AFRICAN NOTES

SA'S new banknotes will have Nelson Mandela's image as the main illustration on all notes, President Jacob Zuma announced at the weekend.

Zuma said the use of Mandela's image was part of the recognition of the former president's role in the fight against apartheid, the liberation of the country and that he was recognized as a leader around the world.
"This humble gesture expresses our gratitude for a life spent in the service of this country," he said.
Saturday's date marks the 22nd anniversary of the release of Mandela after he spent 27 years in jail. His face replaces designs featuring the "big five" safari animals - Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino. All five notes - 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 rand will now bear Mandela's face on the front.

Set’Mobile was launched on Thursday in Yaounde with more than 50,000 SIM cards already sold out, but the network will be activated on January 21, which is the opening day of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, the entity’s management said.
With a capital base of 100 million francs cfa (€152,449), Set’Mobile, which also bears the initials of the famous Anzhi striker, is intended to provide mobile Internet service alongside telephony. The new mobile company expects to get a majority of its market share from the youth who are fans of Eto’o.

The 30yr old footballer now plays for Russian team Anzhi Makhachkala where he earns $29 million every season after tax, making him the highest paid footballer in the world currently, and one of sports highest paid earners.
The market penetration for mobile network in Cameroon is currently at 49 per cent below the fast growing rate of 75% in Cote D’Ivoire, Senegal and Ghana, which local observers see as enough room for the survivability of Eto’o’s new venture against stiff competition from giants Orange and MTN.
